Ms. Yvette Bertrand Bocande

WELCOME PAGE

My name is Yvette Bertrand Bocande and I am thrilled to join the staff of Roybal Learning Center as a Physics instructor. My personality, education, and experience help to make me a very resourceful teacher who is understanding, approachable, patient, and caring, yet establishes and maintains high expectations for academics as well as behavior.

I was born and raised in Dakar, Senegal and can speak fluently in French, English, and Wolof. I can also read and write in Spanish as well as understand and speak some Spanish.

I hold a Master’s Degree in Science with a specialization in Solar Energy and a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics and Chemistry. I received my degree from the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar, Senegal (UCAD), where I participated in the publications and presentations of a few articles on photovoltaic cells. Years later, I moved to Los Angeles where I earned my teaching credential from California State University, Los Angeles.

My practice of teaching began at a very young age when I began to help my siblings and friends with their school work. In college, I tutored high school students in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Concurrently, I gained experience teaching Physics labs in the science department at UCAD.

While living in Los Angeles, I initially worked as a passenger service agent with Air France. Following this, I became a preschool teacher with Training and Research Foundation (TRF), a preschool program affiliated with Head StartNeedless to say, at TRF, my teaching career really took off. Not only did I grow by being exposed to the different communities of the school, but I also improved my teaching skills by engaging in curriculum writing, lesson planning, IEPs, classroom observations, and home visitations.

In the last fourteen years, I have fully embraced and transitioned to High School instruction. I've successfully taught AP Physics B, AP Physics 1 and 2, Honors Physics, Conceptual Physics, Chemistry, and Honors Chemistry at King Drew Magnet High School in Los Angeles. Additionally, I have achieved National Board Certification as I am passionate about learning and growing as a professional. Lastly, I am also a member of the AP College Board where I have provided assistance as a test reader for the past three years.
